In a landmark move that promises to reshape Africa’s approach to climate change, Craig Atkinson, founder of Green Riders, has signed a continent-wide climate agreement.
This historic pact marks a significant milestone in Africa’s collective efforts to combat global warming and promote sustainable development across the region.
Green Riders, a pioneering organization dedicated to sustainable transportation, has been at the forefront of Africa’s green revolution since its inception. Founded by Atkinson, the company has made significant strides in promoting eco-friendly mobility solutions while simultaneously creating green jobs, particularly for unemployed youth across the continent.
The signing ceremony, held in Nairobi, Kenya, drew attendees from all 54 African nations. Heads of state, environmental ministers, and key stakeholders in the climate sector gathered to witness this unprecedented show of unity. The event underscored Africa’s commitment to playing a pivotal role in the global fight against climate change.
“This agreement represents a new chapter in Africa’s climate narrative,” Atkinson declared during his address. “We are no longer just victims of climate change, but active participants in crafting solutions.”
The climate pact outlines ambitious targets and commitments. African nations have collectively pledged to derive 50% of their energy from renewable sources by 2030. Additionally, the agreement sets a bold target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 45% below 2010 levels by 2030.
Sustainable development policies form a crucial component of the pact. These include commitments to green urban planning, sustainable agriculture practices, and the preservation of Africa’s vital ecosystems such as rainforests and wetlands.
Green Riders’ innovative model of sustainable transportation is expected to play a significant role in helping African nations meet these targets. The company’s electric bike-sharing scheme, powered by solar energy, has already made waves across several African cities.
“Our vision has always been to make sustainable transportation accessible to all,” Atkinson explained. “This pact allows us to scale our efforts and contribute more significantly to Africa’s climate goals.”
The organization’s success in creating green jobs aligns perfectly with the pact’s emphasis on sustainable development. To date, Green Riders has employed over 10,000 young Africans, providing them with skills in the burgeoning green economy.
