What is the Pachi Panda Innovation Challenge?
The Pachi Panda Innovation Challenge is a youth-focused platform designed to inspire and support innovative solutions to environmental challenges.
Originating in Zambia in 2022, the initiative has expanded across Africa, with Uganda joining as the fifth country alongside Nigeria, South Africa, Cameroon, and Zambia.
This collaboration between MTN Uganda and WWF invites young innovators aged 18 to 35, including university students and youth-led small and medium enterprises (SMEs), to pitch sustainable business ideas that address critical issues like climate change, resource scarcity, and food insecurity.
By promoting creativity and providing resources, the challenge aims to “Plant, Protect, and Provide” for future generations, as highlighted by MTN Uganda CEO Sylvia Mulinge.
The programme aligns with Uganda’s Vision 2040, which emphasises sustainable industrialisation, environmental protection, and inclusive economic growth, as well as key United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
How the Pachi Panda Challenge Works
The Pachi Panda Innovation Challenge is structured to nurture young entrepreneurs through a multi-stage process:
- Application Phase: Young innovators and SMEs submit their ideas online via the Pachi Panda Challenge portal. Applications are open to individuals and teams residing in Uganda, focusing on tech-enabled solutions for environmental challenges.
- Shortlisting and Sprint Week: Shortlisted participants form teams of up to three members and participate in a five-day sprint week, undergoing a human-centred design process to refine their business models and value propositions.
- National Finals: Top teams pitch their solutions to industry experts, with winners receiving cash prizes of $5,000, $3,000, and $2,000, along with incubation and mentorship support.
- Continental Finals: Top performers advance to the Africa-wide finals, competing against innovators from other participating countries for additional recognition and support.
This structured approach ensures that promising ideas receive the guidance and resources needed to scale into impactful enterprises.

In Nigeria, the 2024 challenge crowned Osarode Stephen Odemwingie for his biorefinery solution, turning fruit and vegetable waste into nutrient-rich supplements for mushroom cultivation.
