Dodai has secured fresh backing from British International Investment (BII), as it accelerates the rollout of electric motorbikes and battery-swapping infrastructure in the capital, Addis Ababa.
The UK’s development finance institution has committed $5 million in debt financing as part of Dodai’s broader $13 million Series A round, reinforcing investor confidence in clean, affordable transport solutions tailored to African cities.
Scaling Electric Mobility in a Frontier Market
Founded around 2022, Dodai operates a vertically integrated model that combines:
- Assembly and deployment of electric motorbikes
- Battery-swapping stations designed for quick turnaround
- A growing operational footprint built largely by local talent
To date, the company has:
- Deployed over 2,000 electric motorbikes
- Built a team of roughly 100 employees, predominantly Ethiopian nationals
This approach addresses two of the biggest barriers to EV adoption in Africa: high upfront costs and limited charging infrastructure.
Why Battery Swapping Matters
Dodai’s model is built around battery swapping rather than plug-in charging, a system particularly suited to dense urban environments.
Instead of waiting hours to recharge, riders can:
- Swap depleted batteries for fully charged ones in minutes
- Reduce vehicle downtime
- Lower upfront costs by separating battery ownership from the bike
This model is increasingly gaining traction across emerging markets as a practical solution for commercial riders, especially in delivery and ride-hailing sectors.
Expansion Plans: From Addis Ababa to Africa
The new funding will support Dodai’s next phase of growth in Addis Ababa, with clear short- and long-term targets.
अगले 12 months:
- Scale to 3,000 battery-swapping users
- Deploy 30 swapping stations

Over the next three years:
- Reach 30,000 users
- Build out 1,000 battery-swapping stations
Beyond Ethiopia, Dodai has outlined ambitions to expand into major African cities, including:
- Abidjan
- Kinshasa
- Accra
- Dar es Salaam
While these expansion plans remain forward-looking, they signal a broader ambition to become a pan-African e-mobility platform.
Strategic Backing from BII
For British International Investment, the investment aligns with its mandate to support high-impact, climate-focused projects in frontier markets.
According to CEO Leslie Maasdorp, Ethiopia represents a compelling opportunity:
“Ethiopia is emerging as one of Africa’s most compelling frontier markets for the clean mobility transition, where the right capital can unlock outsized impact and long-term value.”
The investment also supports BII’s 2026–2031 strategy, which targets:
- At least 25% of investments in frontier markets
- At least 40% in climate finance
Policy and Climate Alignment
The deal has also received diplomatic support. Darren Welch noted that the investment aligns with Ethiopia’s broader climate ambitions and contributes to:
- Job creation
- Affordable urban transport
- Reduced emissions in fast-growing cities
Ethiopia has positioned itself as a regional leader in climate policy, including efforts to transition transport systems toward low-carbon alternatives.
The Role of ARIA in Unlocking Capital
The transaction was supported by the Africa Resilience Investment Accelerator (ARIA), a collaborative platform launched by BII in partnership with FMO and Proparco.
ARIA is designed to:
- De-risk investments in frontier African markets
- Mobilise private capital into underserved sectors
- Support scalable, high-impact businesses
Its involvement reflects the growing importance of blended finance models in scaling climate innovation across Africa.
A Growing Vote of Confidence
For Dodai, the funding represents more than capital. As Hilina Legesse noted:
“This investment reflects growing confidence from international investors in our team’s ability to turn real-world challenges into opportunities to solve.”
That confidence is critical in a sector where execution, including building infrastructure, managing logistics, and driving adoption, matters as much as technology.
Why This Matters
Dodai’s growth highlights several broader trends shaping Africa’s mobility future:
- Electric mobility is moving from pilot to scale
- Battery swapping is emerging as a viable infrastructure model
- Frontier markets like Ethiopia are attracting climate capital
- Localised solutions are proving more effective than imported models
If successful, Dodai could help define how electric two-wheel transport scales across African cities, where motorcycles are a primary mode of mobility.
As demand for sustainable urban mobility grows, Dodai’s model offers a glimpse into a future where clean, efficient, and accessible transport is not just viable but scalable across the continent.
