Not all climate solutions come from research labs or international conferences. The “Western Region Youth Climate Change Justice Summit” will be held in early August in Busia County, Kenya.
The event aims to demonstrate how rural youth can create innovative solutions to combat climate change. This four-day event, ‘Amplifying Voices of Western Kenya’s Youth,’ aims to inspire Busia’s youth and drive global climate-smart solutions.
Climate action is urgent, with rural Busia County facing erratic rainfall, rising temperatures and extreme weather. These challenges disrupt agriculture, threaten food security, and disproportionately affect the most vulnerable populations.
However, the Busia Youth Climate Change Summit aims to change this narrative, turning Busia’s youth from bystanders into active agents of change.
The summit’s focus on “rural innovation” is key to its approach. By prioritizing local knowledge and practices, the event aims to explore how Busia’s unique experiences can inform broader climate action strategies.
For example, summit discussions will explore how traditional practices can be integrated with modern solutions to address climate challenges.
This might involve using local knowledge of weather patterns and plant life in climate adaptation strategies or exploring traditional farming techniques for drought-resistant crops.
The summit will also empower young people with cutting-edge solutions. Topics like climate financing, green jobs for youth, and carbon credit initiatives will be covered.
