Tony Elumelu to Chair Seplat Energy as Effiong Okon Takes Over as CEO

Seplat Energy PLC has announced a planned leadership transition that will see Engr. Effiong Okon appointed as Chief Executive Officer effective 1 August 2026, succeeding Roger Brown who retires after 13 years of service, including six as CEO.

Tony O. Elumelu, CFR, will assume the role of Chairman from 1 January 2027, following Senator Udoma Udo Udoma’s retirement as independent chairman on 31 December 2026.

A Succession Built on Internal Depth

The Seplat Energy Effiong Okon new CEO and Tony Elumelu chairman appointment in 2026 reflects a succession process rooted in institutional continuity rather than external disruption.

Okon brings over 35 years of industry experience and a track record built entirely within the Seplat ecosystem.

His most recent role was Managing Director of ANOH Gas Processing Company, where he led the project to first gas in January 2026, a milestone that demonstrated his ability to deliver complex energy infrastructure on the timelines that matter commercially.

Promoting from within a leadership pipeline that knows the assets, the strategy, and the operating environment reduces transition risk considerably.

For a company managing the integration of the Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited acquisition completed in 2024 and executing against a 2030 strategic plan, continuity of institutional knowledge at the CEO level is a deliberate governance choice, not a default.

Roger Brown’s 13-Year Legacy

The Roger Brown retirement and Seplat Energy CEO succession plan in Nigeria in 2026 closes a chapter that transformed the company’s scale and ambition.

Brown joined in 2013 and assumed the CEO role in 2020, presiding over two transformational acquisitions: Eland Oil and Gas in 2019 and MPNU in 2024. Those deals repositioned Seplat from a mid-sized Nigerian independent into one of the most significant indigenous energy companies on the continent.

Senator Udoma Udo Udoma, who oversaw the MPNU integration and the development of Seplat’s 2030 strategic plan since April 2024, acknowledged Brown’s exceptional contribution to the company’s growth and transformation.

Brown himself described the company as well-positioned for continued growth and long-term value creation, a confident handover note from a CEO who has spent six years building the foundations that his successor will now execute against.

How Seplat Energy’s leadership transition positions the company for its 2030 growth strategy comes down to the specific capabilities each incoming leader brings.

Okon’s engineering and operational background, sharpened by his experience taking ANOH Gas Processing Company to first gas, is precisely the profile needed for a CEO whose immediate mandate is delivering the 2030 roadmap and maximising portfolio value.

He inherits a larger, more complex asset base than any previous Seplat CEO has managed, and his familiarity with that base is an advantage that an external appointment could not replicate.

Okon’s own framing of his priorities is direct: immediate focus on delivering the 2030 Roadmap and maximising the value in the portfolio.

That is the language of operational discipline and execution focus, consistent with what a company in the post-acquisition integration phase needs from its leadership.

Tony Elumelu Brings Strategic Weight to the Chair

The Tony Elumelu Seplat Energy chairman appointment through Heirs Holdings’ Nigeria oil and gas position in 2027 adds a different dimension to the company’s leadership profile.

Elumelu joined the Seplat Board in January 2026 and brings to the chairmanship role his standing as one of Africa’s most prominent business leaders, the relationships that come with founding and chairing Heirs Holdings, and a 20.07% shareholding that aligns his personal financial interests with long-term value creation for all shareholders.

Elumelu described his intention to build on the strong foundations laid by Senator Udoma and Roger Brown, a framing that signals continuity of strategic direction rather than a new chairman arriving with a mandate to reshape the company’s course.

For investors, a chairman whose holding company controls one-fifth of the company’s shares and who has publicly committed to supporting the 2030 growth strategy is a governance signal worth noting.

Seplat Energy’s Leadership Model for Nigeria’s Oil and Gas Sector

The Seplat Energy leadership transition in 2026 and the Nigerian oil and gas executive appointments it involves offer a model that the broader Nigerian energy sector could learn from.

An orderly multi-step succession, with clear effective dates, public commitments from all parties, and a CEO selection grounded in internal talent development, is the governance standard that attracts long-term institutional capital and supports the kind of strategic continuity that complex energy asset portfolios require.

For a Nigerian independent operating listed on both the Nigerian Exchange and the London Stock Exchange, governance quality is not a soft metric.

It is a direct determinant of access to international capital markets, the credibility of investor communications, and the company’s ability to execute transactions of the scale that defined the Brown era.

Seplat’s succession process demonstrates that the governance capability is in place for the next chapter.
